Centralia, Pennsylvania, was once a bustling mining town with a growing population of 2,800 residents. An underground fire began on May 27, 1962 when the city was conducting their yearly controlled-burn of the local landfill before Memorial Day weekend. The fire was not properly extinguished and rapidly spread through the labyrinth of abandoned coal mines beneath Centralia.
