$21 million contract awarded to deepen Vermilion Parish's Freshwater Bayou to the Gulf of Mexico
Vermilion Parish is finally set to benefit from the Acadiana Gulf of Mexico Access Channel (AGMAC), more than two decades after it was first discussed. A contract has been awarded to begin deepening the navigational channel for a 20-mile stretch from the intersection of the Intracoastal Canal down Freshwater Bayou to the Freshwater Bayou Locks. With almost 100 million gallons (379 million liters) of oil combined with dispersants suggested to remain in the Gulf, it is one of the worst pollution events ever.
