Teachers hired from an external agency are almost twice as expensive per hour
Teachers hired via an external agency cost secondary schools twice as much as salaried teachers. The Algemene Rekenkamer, Court of Audit in English, calculated the differences in research. While a teacher on a contract usually costs around 58 euros per hour, a detached teacher of a similar level costs schools 113 euros per hour.

There is a lot of uncertainty among Dutch flower- and plant exporters about hte consequences of physical inspections that will now be carried out upon entry to the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom will launch the second phase of its post-Brexit border control upscaling on Tuesday, which steps up physical checks of plant and animal imports from the European Union at U.K. ports and border crossings.

Pre-fab, flexible homes have higher fire risks; As do homes with flammable insulation
Prefabricated and flexible homes have a bigger risk of rapid and unpredictable home fires than traditional homes. Sustainability measures, like flammable insulation, also increase fire risks, the Dutch Institute of Public Safety (NIPV) warned after investigating three large fires in recent years. The fire brigade endorses these findings, a spokesperson told AD.

Leiden University student suspected of stalking and making threats
A 32-year-old student who allegedly sent threatening messages and a funeral card to The Hague campus of Leiden University last year will face prosecution and a court trial. He was arrested in The Hague with a stabbing weapon in his pocket on January 19, and has been in custody ever since.

Police investigating rape of woman in Tilburg alley during King's Night
A 24-year-old woman in Tilburg said she was raped on the street in the city center during the overnight hours early on Saturday as people were out celebrating King's Night. The woman said she did not know the man who assaulted her, and area residents said they believe it was a suspicious person who had been pestering women earlier in the evening, according to Omroep Brabant.

Arson investigators find dead body in car while searching garage shed fire rubble
Investigators found a body in a car on Monday while investigating the remains of a fire in a garage shed in Berkel en Rodenwijs. The police already said they suspected arson in Sunday’s fire and have made two arrests. “This morning an investigation was carried out into the garage shed that was engulfed in flames during the fire yesterday. A car containing a deceased person was found in the shed,” police said on Monday.

Rapid delivery service Getir announces exit from Netherlands
Rapid grocery delivery service Getir is leaving the Netherlands. As is its subsidiary, Gorillas, the company announced on Monday. The departure leaves Flink as the only rapid grocery deliverer in the country.Getir is also leaving Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. “Getir generates only seven percent of its revenues from the markets it is exiting; this decision will allow Getir to focus its financial resources on Turkey.”

€3 billion mass claim in the works against Dutch State over Schiphol noise
A group of local residents and interest groups is preparing a mass claim of 3 billion euros against the Dutch State over Schiphol Airport. The claim stems from a ruling by the court in The Hague last month. According to that judge, the State has been infringing on the human rights of local residents for some time by not taking enough account of their health.

More rental homes in private sector despite sell-off prompted by looming rent regulation
The number of homes in the private rental sector has increased by around 67,000 in two years to almost 1.2 million. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Land Registry report this based on figures for the period 2021 to 2023. New construction, transformations of existing buildings, and the division of homes contributed to the increase.

KLM staff also allowed to wear sneakers during work from May
KLM employees will soon be allowed to wear sneakers under their outfits during work. Most female employees still wear heels, but they will also be allowed to choose sporting shoes from May 6. A spokesperson confirmed this after a report from Luchtvaartnieuws. The airline said that this will be more comfortable while working and will contribute to the well-being of the staff.
