  • Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews out for potential elimination matchup with Bruins

BOSTON (AP) — Maple Leafs star and NHL goal-scoring leader Auston Matthews will not play in Toronto’s pivotal Game 5 matchup with the Boston Bruins. It comes after he had the Game 2 winner for the Maples Leafs, who trail 3-1 in the first-round series and are trying to stave off elimination. • Giants’ Jordan Hicks strikes out career-high 9, but Pirates win in 10

As he racked up K after K Saturday evening, the only downside for Jordan Hicks was his climbing pitch count. His split-finger fastball dipping at the last second tantalized and mesmerized batters, finishing off eight of Hicks’ career-high nine strikeouts. The San Francisco Giants, as is so often their wont, could do little with a gem of an outing from Hicks. Between their minimal offense and their occasionally erratic bullpen, they fell 4-3 to Pittsburgh in 10 innings at Oracle Park. They’ve...
  • Patrick Bailey's walkoff HR preserves Kyle Harrison's gem for Giants vs. Pirates

Quietly, Patrick Bailey has been hitting with confidence. It's the kind of confidence that can be obscured by the team's middling offensive production to date, but make itself felt when needed most. Bailey was just the guy the Giants needed up in the bottom of the ninth of this scoreless game. Two on, no outs to face Pittsburgh Pirates righty closer David Bednar. Bailey, hitting from the left side, had one simple objective: Wait for a good fastball to hit. The way Bailey has been hitting of...
  • Rep. Adam Schiff's luggage stolen by car burglars in SF

Hello to the city, goodbye to your luggage. That was U.S. Senate candidate Adam Schiff’s rude introduction to San Francisco’s vexing reputation for car burglaries Thursday when thieves swiped the bags from his car while it sat in a downtown parking garage. The heist meant the Democratic congressman got stuck at a fancy dinner party in his shirt sleeves and a hiking vest while everyone else sat in suits. Not quite the look the man from Burbank was aiming for as he rose to thank powerhouse...
  • Are 49ers listening to trade offers for All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel?

The San Francisco 49ers’ other All-Pro wide receiver, Deebo Samuel, is also generating trade interest. The 49ers’ offseason has been dominated by speculation that they could deal wideout Brandon Aiyuk due to a contract impasse, but teams were also inquiring about Samuel in the hours before the start of the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night, the Chronicle’s Mike Silver reported. The 49ers are listening, but they would have to be overwhelmed by a trade offer to part with Samuel....

  • Jordan Montgomery outduels Blake Snell as D-backs trounce Giants 17-1

Before Friday’s game at Oracle Park, former San Francisco Giants DH Joc Pederson, now with Arizona, dubbed the evening’s starting pitchers “the matchup of the left-handed late-comers,” but the Boras Battle also might have worked. Blake Snell, the last of the Giants’ major additions, has yet to flash his 2023 NL Cy Young form after signing only four days before the end of spring training in Scottsdale, Ariz. He gave up five runs Friday in San Francisco’s 17-1 loss and surrendered nine hits in 4⅔...
  • S.F. leaders hail city’s resiliency on anniversary of 1906 quake

The ground heaved and shook, buildings collapsed, fires ignited and thousands of San Franciscans died. The city was nearly leveled. That was in 1906. But early Thursday morning, well before daybreak, dozens of people gathered on Market Street in front of Lotta’s Fountain to commemorate the 118th anniversary of the huge earthquake and fire that destroyed then reshaped San Francisco. The annual ceremony, which takes place leading up to 5:12 a.m. — the moment the earthquake struck — featured...
