New car park approved for Souter Lighthouse to help cope with 70,000 visits a year

Plans to upgrade the car park of a much-loved visitor attraction have been given the green light by borough development bosses. South Tyneside Council’s planning department has approved an application for the Souter Lighthouse complex off the Coast Road between South Shields and Whitburn. The National Trust, which manages the heritage site, lodged an application last year for permission to improve the popular car park near the lighthouse complex.
